Our organization carried out a mission to Tanzania in March 2019, launching a new chapter of humanitarian activities in the developing world. The mission was organized following an invitation from the NGO KEDAS and His Eminence Metropolitan Ieronymos of Mwanza.
The Greek medical and humanitarian non-governmental organization Center for International Solidarity and Cooperation (KEDAS) began the construction of the Ufufuo Health Center in Bukoba, Tanzania, in 2005 and completed it in 2012, with the support of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and private donors, under the auspices of the Orthodox Metropolis of Tanzania.

The Ufufuo Health Center belongs to the Orthodox Church of Tanzania, specifically to the Metropolis of Mwanza. Our close collaboration with His Eminence Metropolitan Ieronymos of Mwanza was especially significant. He welcomed us with warm hospitality and enthusiasm, and together we discussed the capabilities and future development of the Health Center.
The Ufufuo Health Center is a well-organized healthcare facility comprising outpatient clinics, hematology, biochemistry, and radiology laboratories, a fully equipped dental clinic, an ophthalmology clinic, and an operating theatre for performing minor surgical procedures.
The Health Center is staffed by 22 healthcare professionals, including one physician and two Medical Officers who have completed a three-year medical training program.
The primary objective of the first mission was to support the activities of the Ufufuo Health Center, provide specialized healthcare services to the population of the Kagera Region through experienced specialist physicians, and establish exploratory contacts with the region’s health authorities.
These efforts aimed to lay the foundation for long-term cooperation with both the Ufufuo Health Center and the Bukoba Regional Government Hospital, with the ultimate goal of delivering greater healthcare benefits to the local population.

During the mission:
- 38 patients were examined at the Ufufuo Health Center, including 12 men, 21 women, and 5 children.
- 20 patients with surgical conditions received medical care, and 4 minor surgical procedures were performed.
- 18 patients presenting with ear, nose, and throat (ENT) conditions were treated with appropriate medical care.
- Eight members of the Health Center’s medical and paramedical staff received professional training.
The following were also provided:
- Essential equipment and consumable supplies for the operation of a basic outpatient ENT clinic.
- Equipment for performing minor surgical procedures.
- Consumable supplies for the Biochemistry Laboratory, sufficient for one year of operation.
- Panteleimon Vasileiou – Associate Professor of Surgery, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA); Attikon General Hospital, Athens.
- Hypatia Dousi-Anagnostopoulou – Associate Professor, Laboratory of Histology and Embryology, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA); Mission Organizer.
- Varvara Skia – ENT (Otorhinolaryngology) Surgeon, IASO Children’s Hospital, Athens.
