The program “Improving the life of seniors ΙΙ” was awarded as one of the Best Service-Learning Programs by the European Forum on Service-Learning in Bucharest, due to the participation of the students from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Our program at a glance:
Aim: The mobilization of seniors residing permanently in Non-Profit Care Homes (NPCHE), through:
- Connecting seniors with with secondary school students, with regular meetings
- Geriatric Assessment to eligible seniors, and the implementation of suggested, to retain their level of functionality and overall health recommendations
- training and empowering of caregivers and staff of the NPCHE in relation to the prevention and treatment of geriatric syndromes
Beneficiaries: Seniors residing in NPCHE who participate in the program and caregivers and staff of said NPCHE, with the ultimate goal to improve the daily life and quality of life of seniors.

The program had 3 separate pillars, with which we achieved the following results:
Geriatric Assessments
- Global Geriatric Assessment (by a Geriatrician, Physiotherapist and Dietitian) for 13 seniors in Non-Profit Care Homes who met the appropriate medical criteria
- 9 free clinical assessments by specialist doctors, according to the recommendations of the Assessment
- Re-evaluation of 10 seniors
Training Seminars for Caregivers
- 6 online thematic seminars for caregivers of older people
- 4 in-person seminars for caregivers of elderly people in the collaborating NPCHE
- 20 one-on-one online meetings of caregivers in the cooperating NPCHEs with the lecturers of the seminars
- Training of a total of 94 caregivers from 11 non-profit organizations
Online Student-Senior Meetings
- 83 online meetings of Students with Seniors
- 85 team preparation meetings
In addition, through our pilot collaboration with the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, 8 in-person physical strengthening meetings of undergraduate students with seniors were held.
